Constructing a cold frame is an
inexpensive way to get a head start on the coming growing season.
It is
the ideal spot to locate seedlings before placing them in the garden.
A
cold frame is simply a bottomless wooden box with a glass or plastic lid that
traps the heat of the sun to help seedlings grow, and protects them from cooler
nighttime temperatures. This helps plants make the transition from indoors to
outdoors gradually.
You can even place a small 25 watt light inside
your cold frame to help keep it warm. Just make sure to keep it far enough away
from the plants so they don't get burned. Flourescent bulbs are great for this
purpose...they use minimal electricity, and don't get too hot.
Lift the
lid a few inches each day to let some fresh air in, but be sure to close it
early enough so that the plants don't get too cold with the onset of evening
temperatures. Remember, once the sun starts going down, the temperature can
drop pretty fast...especially if there isn't any cloud cover.
If you
forget to open the lid on a sunny day, be warned that your cold frame could get
pretty hot. You don't want your precious little seedlings to get over 85
degrees.
You should also know that cold temperatures will promote short,
compact growth, (a good thing) and hot temperatures will promote tall, gangly
growth (a not so good thing).
