Constructing a Hotbed

Constructing a hotbed is similar to a cold frame in that it consists of a wooden box, and a lid of glass or plastic. However the main difference is that you must first dig a pit that is 16 - 18 inches deep, and line the hole with the wooden box. A few 2x12s will do nicely.

let the wood stick up from the ground leve about 4 -6 inches, and place your cover on top.

Fill all but the last 8 - 10 inches with manure, and then top it off with with about 6 inches of soil.

You'll have to let it set for about two weeks so that the manure has time to cool off before placing any plants in it, and youll want to water it a few times so that it can all settle.

Monitor the temperature of the soil so that it is about 75 degrees before planting.
