For many of us, the cold, wet winter
months can make us a little antsy. Especially after the holidays have come and
gone, the family has gone back home, and the new year's festivities are behind
us.
Planning for the coming growing season is a task that us gardeners
look foreward to as an opportunity to get some dirt under our fingernails,
start soaking up some sunshine, get get outdoors for some fresh
air.
There are many things we can do to keep ourselves busy, and getting
a good head start on the coming growing season is the best place to
start.
Hopefully by now, you've ordered any seeds that you'll need for
the coming growing season, but you'll also want to use up any seed that you
have left-over from last year.
Start by utilizing your window sills, and
some narrow peat pots. Fill them with some sterilized seed mix, and whichever
seeds you have on hand. If its January, you've got about two months before you
can start putting out your plants, but two months worth of growth is just about
right. It'll give most of your seedlings a chance to get strong before
transplanting.
You might have to put some of your plants into larger
pots as they grow, but having early tomatoes or corn for example, will be well
worth the extra effort.
You can alo spend some time outdoors
constructing a hoophouse, a hot bed, or a
cold frame. Placing
some black plastic on last year's garden area will help the soil to warm up
faster, and let you plant earlier too.
